Sometimes we can feel like God is looking down at us and wondering why He even sent His Son to save us. This couldn't be further from the truth of what's really going on in God's heart. Not only that, but God is not looking down on us in His heart, but is always with us and living inside us if we are believers in Christ. He never leaves us and is aching to help us out of our painful situation. Everyone misses the mark (Romans 3:23) and stumbles and falls. If we could see ourselves through His eyes, looking at our own child beating themselves up over making mistakes, we would have a much more clear picture of why Christ gave everything for us.
We sometimes need to step back and look at things through a different lens and adopt a new method of framing the situation. Doing this we can understand the magnitude of God's love, and just how strong He is in being able to carry us through any addiction or poor habits we have found ourselves under. If you feel remorse and sorrow over your sins, and your heart-cry is to do better and please God, you can be rest assured He will get you there no matter how unlikely it seems.
What To Do When You Fall
When we fail at keeping sin at bay in our lives, and we slip and fall into indulging in things that we know God isn't pleased with, the last thing we should do is run from our Father. His love and compassion never fails, even when we do, as Paul says (2 Corinthians 12:9) we can do the same as him and “boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” His mercies are new every single day, meaning He is full of never ending love and forgiveness for us (Lamentations 3:23). Sometimes once we learn the commandments and have a heart to do well and be a child that brings joy to God's heart, we can tend to get very hard on ourselves about our mishaps and mistakes. God does not want to punish us, but is eager to forgive and help and heal.
Be reminded that you are not your sin, nor are you your body, but rather these are things that are at odds with you and are fighting against you (Romans 7:20). Your body, what the Bible calls the flesh, has its own cravings and desires that are not always for your good. This is especially true if we have indulged in sinful or harmful things willingly in the past, and created a habit where our body begins demanding these things. Keep your heart in check, remember God is on your side and not against you, and don't let the idea that your struggle against anything is your identity. Our identity is sealed in believing what Christ done for us and His love and faithfulness, not by our own perfection or faithfulness (Ephesians 2:9).
Who God Says You Are
God says you are made clean and pure in His sight (Colossians 1:22) and that no one can take you out of His hand (John 10:28). This means that even when we slip up and fall into sin, God has you covered by Christ and His righteousness and you are still blameless. God rules His Kingdom with a scepter called righteousness that keeps you in right standing with no consciousness of guilt or shame no matter what (Hebrews 1:8). Rightness makes the other person wrong, but righteousness comes to make all things right meaning Christ made us righteous through His forgiveness and right with God permanently for believing in Him. 1st John 1:9 says that if we sin that we have an advocate with the Father who paid for our forgiveness of all our sins, past, present, and future. God is not the kind of Father to belittle you or beat you up over your mistakes, but is standing with you, cheering you on to keep fighting, and reminding you that He will always pick you up and you can beat this.
The entire reason you are bothered by your sin is because you care and don’t want to be in it, and God knows your heart. You are not alone in your battles as many of your brothers and sisters are in the ring with you, fighting against sin and temptations of the flesh, taking blows and getting back up everyday to keep fighting the good fight. While the voice of the enemy may be speaking in the back of our mind, be encouraged that it is a liar and contrary to what God says about you. If a negative voice tells you that you are unworthy, you remind it that you will beat this and Christ paid the way to make it possible. Remind that voice that you are clean by Jesus' blood and God knows who you really are in your heart of hearts and you don't want any part of sin (1 Peter 1:18-19). Speak the truth of Scripture to counter anything that is not of God in your mind (2 Corinthians 10:5).
God Proved Your Worth To Him On The Cross
While there are plenty of people teaching today that you are a worthless wretch, God has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are worth the blood of God Himself according to Him (Matthew 13:46). God decided that He wasn't just going to tell you that He loves you and that you mean everything to Him, but that He was going to show you (Romans 5:8). In John 10:18 Jesus Christ said that He has the power to lay His life down, and to take it back up, meaning He knew exactly what He was doing when He died for you and me. He knew we would need help, would fall and stumble, and would need the payment He made on the cross to wash us completely clean.
God says you are a priceless jewel in His hand (Isaiah 62:3) and that He leaves the 99 sheep to go bring the one lost back to Him (Matthew 18:12). If we keep these truths planted firmly in our heart by meditating on them (focusing on, or looking at, for a prolonged period of time) in our mind, we will find new strength to never give up and to trust that He will bring us into victory over sin and addictions no matter how unlikely it may seem.
It is the goodness of God that brings change in a person’s heart (Romans 2:4). Make sure you know God's heart in every situation is Christ on the cross in your place so that you can win and beat any sin trying to separate you from Him and make you turn from Him. Reaffirm to yourself in God's light of truth that God has you covered (John 6:37) and that you are forgiven when you stumble because He knows your heart does not truly desire sin.
Falling Doesn't Mean Failing
In Proverbs 24:16 it says the righteous fall seven times and get back up again. While falling doesn't feel good and those feelings may be trying to tell you that you'll never succeed, God has said that He would uphold you with His righteous right hand (Isaiah 41:10). Everyone has their moments, and even the greats in the Bible fell and made gigantic mistakes. Abraham disobeyed God more than once, king David fell to his flesh and then killed a man, Moses also killed a man, Solomon has a long list, Lot was mistake prone, Peter denied the Lord Jesus practically to His face, and Paul persecuted Christians and had them killed. If you think God can't make a winner out of you, after bringing all of those men through the fire, then you are mistaken because He certainly can!
Remember again, as stated earlier, that it was Paul himself, the chief of sinners (1 Timothy 1:15) by his own words, who said I will boast in my weakness that Christ's strength may be made perfect in me (2 Corinthians 12:9). God is far above and outside of time and knew everything you and I would do before we done it, yet He died for us anyway. Forgiveness is not deserved, it is accepted. Ephesians 1:4 says He chose you to be His before the world began. We are Sons and Daughters of God that He knew would love Him for all that He has done for us and all that He is, and by remembering we are His child we can be confident He is going to finish the good work He started in us (Philippians 1:6). Never give up, never give in, and never stay down knowing that God loves you no matter how many times you fall (Luke 7:47). Keep your eyes on the cross that proves He will never abandon you, forsake you, or condemn you and remember if He loved you enough to do that, there is nothing He won't do for you.
Romans 8:32 - He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
Romans 8:1 - There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
